Preserving an Ancient City in Ash The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD buried the Roman city of Pompeii under layers of ash, preserving it remarkably well. When archaeologists unearthed the ancient city centuries later, they discovered intact walls, buildings, streets, and even art. Despite the ruins’ preservation, the vibrant city of Pompeii with its amphitheater, gymnasium, port, and temples is a far cry from its former glory.
