6. Nero To Zero

From Extravagance to Ruins Emperor Nero’s Golden Palace, or Domus Aurea, was an extravagant complex covering nearly half a square mile in Rome. With lavish decorations, including gold, precious stones, and intricate designs, the palace was a symbol of Nero’s opulence. However, subsequent rulers stripped the palace of its materials, and earthquakes further damaged it. Although the main structure survives, it pales in comparison to its former glory.
