4. The Sveno Project: The Flying Circus Bomber
In anticipation of future aerial warfare, the Soviet Union developed experimental aircraft in the 1930s. The Sveno Project, also known as the Chain Link Project, involved modifying a bomber to carry smaller fighter planes. After takeoff, the fighters would dock with the bomber and be transported to the battlefront. Although these aircraft saw limited success in the early stages of World War II, they were eventually replaced by more advanced fighter jets.
