3. The Antonov A-40: The Flying Tank
In a bold attempt to glide tanks straight onto the battlefield, the Soviet Union designed the Antonov A-40. This unconventional prototype featured detachable biplane wings and a twin tail attached to a light tank. The plan was for a bomber to tow the tank, which would then be released to glide into enemy territory. However, due to the excessive drag and impracticality, the A-40 project never progressed beyond the initial test flights.
