The Löwchen is a small dog that’s also called the Little Lion Dog or Petit Chien Lion in its home country. It’s a kind of toy dog and not meant for sports. People in Europe bred this dog in 1422, and we know this from old paintings and tapestries that show the dog.

Long ago, this dog was like a special friend to rich and important people. It would spend its days relaxing in luxury. The Löwchen used to be very rare in the 1970s, but now there are more of them around.

Even though it’s called a little lion, it won’t grow to be big and strong. The most it can weigh is eighteen pounds. This dog is happy, clever, and likes to be active. It usually lives for 12-14 years and stays pretty healthy. But just in case, it’s a good idea to get pet insurance from companies like Trupanion or Petplan. And because not many of these dogs are around, having pet insurance is even more important.
