9. Akita

Average Price: $4,500*
Country of Origin: Japan

Starting in the hilly areas of Northern Japan, the Akita dog has two types: the Japanese Akita and the American Akita. Both types are big dogs, with males weighing up to 130 pounds. Originally, the Akita was a guard dog. It used to protect the Japanese royal family and other important people.

These dogs also used to hunt black bears, wild boars, and big deer. This strong nature still exists in Akitas today; they don’t back down from a fight. If an Akita is introduced to other dogs and people when young, it will be friendly. It’s also really loyal and protective of its family.

Out of all the native Japanese dog breeds, the Akita is probably the most respected and admired. Sadly, Akitas have been banned in many American cities. But even with these bans, famous people still adore them. People Magazine shared that actors Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. brought two Akitas into their family in November 2020.
