8. Pharaoh Hound

Average Price: $6,500*
Country of Origin: Malta

The Pharaoh Hound is called “The Blushing Dog” because of its special coat color. It was originally bred for chasing rabbits on the Maltese Islands. In their traditional language, they’re known as Kelb-tal-Fenek, which means “rabbit dog.” These dogs’ ancestors used to hunt gazelles with Egyptian rulers.

Although these dogs come from Egypt, they became popular in Malta and were so loved that they became the national dog there. The Pharaoh Hound has been around for over five thousand years, maybe even longer. They’re clever and can be taught things easily. These energetic dogs usually live for 11 to 14 years.

Pharaoh Hounds usually get along with other dogs, but sometimes they might not get along with dogs of the same gender or smaller dogs. Because they’re still natural hunters, they shouldn’t live with smaller pets like cats or rabbits. It’s better to let them use their hunting skills on Chewy chew toys instead.
