7. Megarherium Americanum : Giants Of The Land
The Megatherium, an ancestor of modern-day sloths, roamed South America between 4,000 and 8,000 years ago. Standing at an imposing 12 feet tall and weighing four tons, they were anything but small and cute. These gigantic creatures had seven-inch claws, which were likely used for swiping down tall vegetation. While they were primarily herbivorous, there is speculation that they occasionally scavenged or even hunted smaller herbivores. Ultimately, human hunting and climate change led to their extinction.
